WSOC Begins BIG EAST Play

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (3-2-2) begins BIG EAST Conference play with home matches against Creighton on Thursday, September 21 at 7 p.m. and a Sunday, September 24 afternoon match against St. John's at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on FloSports.Â
Thursday night's game vs. Creighton will be Jersey Night with kids 18 and under getting in for FREE if they wear a jersey. Sunday against the Johnnies will be $2 Miller Lites promotion (while supplies last).Â
The Huskies were picked sixth in the BIG EAST preseason poll. Both Creighton (5th) and St. John's (3rd) were picked ahead of the Huskies.Â
Last year, UConn picked up a big 2-1 road win at Creighton to open BIG EAST play. The Huskies and Bluejays will only meet for the third time in program history on Thursday.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Huskies and Johnnies are meeting for the 29th time dating back to 1993. UConn lost 1-0 in the regular season match up in Queens and then returned to St. John's for a BIG EAST Quarterfinal matchup. The teams tied 1-1 with the Huskies eventually being eliminated in penalty kicks.Â
Sophomore Chioma Okafor leads the Huskies with four goals this season and is tied for first in the BIG EAST Conference with 4.14 shots per game.Â
The UConn defense has been excellent this season with just four goals allowed to this point, tied for 14th nationally and second in the BIG EAST.Â
Senior Kaitlyn Mahoney has posted four shutouts in goal and ranks third in the BIG EAST with a 0.57 goals against average.Â
The Huskies once again lead the BIG EAST Conference in attendance with an average of 1081 fans this season.Â
Creighton enters Thursday with a 2-2-4 record and has been led by Abigail Santana and her three goals scored this season. Goalkeeper Keelan Terrell ranks second in the BIG EAST with 36 saves. She has notched three shutouts this season.
The Johnnies enter the weekend 5-1-2 on the year. The team is second in the BIG EAST with 17 goals this season. Jessica Garziano is tied for third and leads St. John's with five goals this season.
