Huskies Dominate Merrimack in Season Opener

MANCHESTER, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team cruised past Merrimack in the season opener 7-0 at Magic Lincer Tennis Club Saturday night.
The freshmen; Victoria Matos, Caroline Hinshaw, and Isabella Asenov led the way with confident wins at the fourth through sixth singles positions. Hinshaw and Asenov both won without dropping a set.
"This was a great way to start our spring season with a strong win," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "We have had two solid weeks of practice and training, and it was finally nice to play our first match. The team was excited to play today and a little nervous, but we got through the nerves and a few close sets, to finish strong on all the courts. Our 3 freshmen led the way at #4-6 in singles with convincing wins to get our first 3 singles points. That was followed up by our top 3 players, who all had challenging first sets, but stepped-up big time in the second sets to all win in straight sets. Overall, I was very happy with the way the team competed today. They were tough when they needed to be, and that was the difference in the match."
On the doubles side, junior Maria Constantinou and senior Nansi Toskova earned themselves the first doubles win of 2024 winning 6-1 at second doubles. Soon after, doubles partners junior Isabel Petri Bere and Hinshaw secured a 6-2 victory at third doubles to clinch the doubles point.
Then, on the singles side, Matos was the first player to go 2-0 on the day at fourth singles winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Hinshaw took the second singles win at fifth singles and Asenov clinched the first match of the season.
