STORRS, Conn.- The UConn women's field hockey team improves to 8-0 at home and 13-2 overall as they take down no.14 UMass Sunday afternoon by a final of 1-0. Julia Bressler scored the lone goal for the Huskies on a penalty stroke with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
A matchup between two ranked teams, the game was a defensive battle between the Huskies and the Minutewomen. Neither team was able to generate much offense to start the game as both teams stood strong and locked down the midfield. Through two quarters, the UConn defense held UMass to zero shots on goal, while the Huskies were held to just two shots on goal.
Both teams found their offensive stride in the third quarter. The Minutewomen registered their first shots on goal in the quarter, both being saved by Natalie McKenna, while the Huskies attack was able to generate chances and because of that for UMass into committing a foul that resulted in a penalty stroke. With 52 seconds remaining in the quarter, Julia Bressler stepped up to the dot and was able to score the penalty stroke to give UConn the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies had plenty of chances to extend their lead, registering a total of nine penalty corners throughout the game, but the UMass defense shut them down. The one goal lead proved to be enough for the Huskies as their defense shut UMass down in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-0 at home, and 13-2 overall. Up next UConn will welcome Liberty to Storrs for a BIG EAST battle.
