Huskies Drop Season Opener to Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The No.24 UConn women's lacrosse team dropped their first game of the season on the road against Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon.
The Huskies scored first as Rayea Davis, in her first goal of the season, put one into the back of the net on a pass from Kate Shaffer. Senior, Susan Lafountain, quickly followed that up with a free position goal of her own to put UConn up 2-0. The Stags fought back, scoring three in a row before the first period was over. In the midst of the Fairfield run, grad student and veteran goalkeeper, Landyn White notched her 600th save for the Huskies.
Lafountain picked up two more goals in the second period to notch herself a hat trick. Davis closed out the half with another goal, as Fairfield scored one more. Going into halftime, the Huskies were up 5-4 on the Stags with all five goals coming from Lafountain and Davis.
As the third period started, Davis, once again, found the back of the net to give herself a hat trick. She followed that up with another goal for a total of four on the day. The Stags outscored the Huskies 4-2 in the third period and were up one goal as the clock ticked down.
The final period of the game saw a goal for grad student, Shaffer, her first of the year. The Stags kept their scoring streak going and were up three goals with 10 minutes to go on the game clock. Neither team scored until Lafountain found the back of the net with less an a minute to go – the Huskies still down by two. Time would run out on the clock as the final score read 11-9, Fairfield.
It was a record-breaking day for White, despite the loss. She broke the program record in saves, and now holds the current high at 611. Davis and Lafountain each tallied four goals, while Shaffer had one. Riley Daly and Rylee Brown each had three caused turnovers. White and Daly had four ground balls apiece, while Brown and Morgan Carter had three.
The Huskies will stay on the road as they travel to the US Lacrosse Facility to take on No.3 James Madison in a neutral-site contest at 12:00pm on Saturday February 17th.
