HookC Wins Seventh-Straight, Clinches Series vs. Villanova, 11-1

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (24-18, 9-2 BIG EAST) secured a series win against Villanova (14-26, 5-9 BIG EAST) with an 11-1 victory on Saturday afternoon in front of 1081 at Elliot Ballpark.
The Huskies put together a pretty complete performance with strong defensive and offensive performance while LHP Garrett Coe fired his second complete game of the season.
UConn jumped in front in the first with a lead off hustle double from Caleb Sphur to extend his hit streak to 15 games and on-base streak to 20. Shpur advanced to third on a fly out to center and scored on a pass ball to make it 1-0.
In the second the Huskies flashed the leather defensively. Jake Studley made a sprawling catch down the right field line for the first out of the frame. With a runner on and two outs, Cam Hassert hit a fly ball to left that just kept carrying. Left fielder Korey Morton sprinted back to the ball, timed his jump and robbed a potential two-run homer to keep it 1-0 Huskies.Â
The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth. Jake Studley fell behind 0-2 in the count and eventually fought his way back to earn a two-out walk. Matt Malcom followed with a long two-run home run to centerfield to extend the lead to 3-0.Â
The Huskies broke open the game in the fifth inning with a five-run frame. Tyler Minick ripped an RBI single to left and Paul Tammaro added on with a two-run base hit to highlight to frame.Â
Matt Malcom capped the scoring for the Huskies with his second two-run homer of the day to make it 11-0.Â
Coe went the distance for the second time this season with six hits allowed, one unearned run, zero walks and six strikeouts. 17 of Coe's 27 outs were recorded in the air.Â
UConn looks to go for the sweep on Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. start.Â
