STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (25-18, 10-2 BIG EAST) swept the Villanova Wildcats (14-27, 5-10 BIG EAST), 10-8, on a Korey Morton two-run walk off home run in front of an Elliot Ballpark record crowd of 1527 on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies led 8-1 after a Jake Studley grand slam in the sixth inning and looked to be well on their way to an eighth-straight victory.Â
But the Wildcats had other ideas, Villanova plated two runs in the seventh and scored five runs on five hits in the eighth to tie the score at 8-8.
After the Huskies were held scoreless in the eighth, Brady Afthim walked a pair of hitters in the ninth but was able to preserve the 8-8 scoreline.
In the ninth, Luke Broadhurst nearly hit a walk off home run to right center but the ball hit the top of the fence and resulted in a lead off double.Â
Morton followed with his fourth hit of the day, a no doubt home run onto the Rizza Performance Center in left field to lift the Huskies to the series sweep.Â
Morton, Broadhurst and Studley combined for nine of the Huskies 11 hits on the day and drove in 10 of the 11 UConn runs.
UConn starter Ian Cooke pitched well for the Huskies with six innings of work with four hits allowed, just one run and had three strikeouts.Â
The Huskies scored three runs in the first inning on a Morton RBI double and Bryan Padilla sacrifice fly. Morton eventually scored on a wild pitch that was thrown behind Maddix Dalena to make it 3-0.Â
Luke Broadhurst made it 4-0 with an RBI single off the pitcher, Devin Rivera, and ricocheted to the first baseman Dylan Dennis.Â
Next up, the Huskies will be off for final exams this week and will resume BIG EAST play next weekend at Seton Hall beginning Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m.
