MANCHESTER, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 win over UMass at home at Magic Lincer Tennis Club Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies are now 10-6 overall, ensuring a winning record in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 20 years.
In the match, UConn nailed down the doubles point with wins at second doubles and first doubles. Then, in singles play, it would come down to the wire as UMass would tack on three singles points at the third, fourth, and sixth singles spots. With the Minutewomen up 3-2, it would come down to Cameron Didion at the fifth position and Maria Constantinou at the second position. Didion took a three-set win going 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Then, Constantinou rallied back after dropping the first set, 6-4, to then bounce back with a 6-2, 6-3 second and third set to clinch the match. This would make it her second straight clinched match against UMass with another 4-3-win as last season over the Minutewomen.
"This was a great win today over UMass," said tennis head coach Glenn Marshall. "We always have very close matches with them, and today was no exception. We started out with some great doubles at number 1 and 2 to clinch the doubles point. Moving into singles, we had 4 three set matches, and Maria ended up with the clinching win. Olivia and Cameron also played great today with their singles win. Overall, I am super proud of the team's effort today, we really competed well at crunch time."
Constantinou now extends her singles record to 9-5 playing at the second singles spot all season and currently holds the team-best singles record. With also a win in doubles with teammate Olivia Wright, their doubles record moves to 7-4 at the first doubles spot.
