STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (11-16, 1-1 BIG EAST) evened its BIG EAST series against Xavier (15-15, 1-1 BIG EAST), 8-2, on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
UConn starting pitcher Garrett Coe was strong on the hill for the Huskies, pitching a shutout into the eighth inning. The lefthander kept the Musketeers off balance and didn't allow a hit until the fifth.
The Huskies jumped in front early on Saturday with a two-out, RBI single from third baseman Luke Broadhurst. Designated hitter Matt Garbowsi quickly followed with a two-run double to the right centerfield gap to make it 3-0 Huskies.
Maddix Dalena added to the lead in the fourth with his third home run of the weekend, a solo shot, that pushed the UConn lead to 4-0.
Bryan Padilla (RBI single) and Luke Broadhurst (RBI double) helped provide insurance for the Huskies.
Coe closed his day in the eighth by going 7.1 innings of two-run ball that featured four hits, two walks and zero strikeouts. The victory is the fourth of the season and 12th of his career.
Braden Quinn closed out the game by recording the final five outs of the ballgame and lock down the first BIG EAST win of the season.
The win forces a rubber game on Sunday at 11:05 a.m. at Elliot Ballpark.Â

- In six career appearances against Xavier, LHP Garrett Coe is 2-0 with a pair of saves and has allowed five total runs in 24.2 inning pitched against the Musketeers.
- After going 1-16 on Friday, the Huskies 1-4 batters (Padilla, Studley, Tammaro & Morton) combined to go 7-16 with four runs scored and two driven in.Â
- All nine Huskies recorded a hit on Saturday, the first time UConn has achieved that this season.
