Huskies Defeat Temple, Secure Another BIG EAST Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — UConn women's field hockey secured a 1-0 victory over Temple at Howarth Field, with the game's only goal coming in the second quarter and a strong defensive effort preserving the shutout.
The first quarter began with UConn taking an early offensive opportunity through a penalty corner by Fien Hollander at 1:29. Shortly after, Julia Bressler's shot was blocked, maintaining the scoreless status. On defense, Natalie McKenna made a notable save against Temple's Agustina Tucceri at 7:02, preserving the clean sheet.
Milou Heuker contributed a critical defensive save following a Temple penalty corner at 9:12, stopping a shot by Lonneke Kerkhof. The quarter concluded without any goals scored, with the score standing at 0-0.
UConn capitalized on a critical moment in the second quarter with Bressler converting a penalty kick at 19:26, marking her sixth goal of the season. The goal came during a period marked by numerous fouls, primarily committed by Temple, including a green card issued to Mara Lenting. Despite Temple's efforts to equalize, including a blocked shot by Kathryn Gauvin, Connecticut maintained their lead. The quarter concluded with the Huskies ahead 1-0.
The third quarter began with the Huskies maintaining a narrow 1-0 lead over Temple. Early in the quarter, Temple's offensive efforts were thwarted by UConn's goalkeeper, McKenna, who made crucial saves against shots from Marsha Ariesen and Emmie Goldberg, preserving the team's lead. Julia Bressler was awarded a penalty shot but was denied by Temple's goalkeeper, Alex Lepore, keeping the score unchanged. Despite a series of fouls from both teams, UConn managed to close the quarter without conceding, maintaining their 1-0 advantage as the quarter ended.
The Huskies began the fourth quarter maintaining a 1-0 lead against Temple, with a strong defensive effort highlighted by McKenna's save off Mathea Lassalle's shot less than a minute into the quarter. Sol Simone executed a penalty corner at the 51:40 mark, followed by a shot saved by Temple's goalie Lepore. Lene Bujes continued to pressure Temple's defense with two blocked shots during the quarter.
The quarter was marked by several fouls from both teams, interrupting the flow of play. Despite these setbacks, UConn held their defensive line, preventing Temple from equalizing. The quarter ended without any changes to the score, securing a 1-0 victory.
Bressler scored the game-winning goal, converting one of her two shots on goal into a successful penalty stroke. McKenna played a strong defensive role, recording a shutout with four saves over 60 minutes. Heuker contributed defensively with a crucial defensive save.
