Werkmeister Notches 1000th Career Kill; Huskies Sweep Georgetown

STORRS, Conn. —UConn women's volleyball (15-4, 4-3 BIG EAST) swept the Georgetown Hoyas (10-10, 3-4 BIG EAST) in straight sets (25-11, 26-24, 25-23) at the UConn Volleyball Center on Friday afternoon.
UConn controlled the first set, ignited by dominance on the service line. Emma Werkmeister fired in two aces, and Isabella Suhy added another to put the Huskies in front 10-3. Anna Herman and Hanna Tylska kept the UConn offense going, adding kills to extend the lead to 17-7. Suhy poured in another ace, and Werkmeister took control down the stretch, with two kills and two aces to lift the hosts to a 25-11 first set victory.
The BIG EAST foes traded points in a tightly contested second frame, keeping the score level at 6-6. Tylska and Audrey Rome put the Huskies in front 9-7, with a kill each. However, Georgetown rallied to take a 13-11 lead, capitalizing on UConn errors and multiple blocks from Kamyrn Lee-Caracci. The Hoyas extended their lead to 18-13, with Samantha Soderlund chipping in multiple terminations, pushing UConn into a timeout. Georgetown remained in front throughout the frame, but the Huskies battled back to tie the score at 22-22, fueled by a Grace Maria ace and a combined block from Herman and Loren Winn. Georgetown took the next two points, going ahead 24-22. The Huskies would not be denied in their comeback effort, as kills from Werkmeister and Rome sandwiched two Suhy aces for a 26-24 second set victory.
The third set saw UConn and Georgetown trade momentum several times. Georgetown initially took a lead with a service ace by Lee-Caracci and a kill from McGregor, leading 8-6. The Huskies responded with stronger play on the service line, with aces from Maria and Brenna Wyman leveling the score at 8-8. After falling behind 13-10, the Hoyas rattled off five straight points, taking a 15-13 lead. Werkmeister and Eli Adams powered another UConn rally, as the hosts leapt in front 17-16. Werkmeister fired in her 1,000th career kill in a clutch moment, keeping the Huskies in front 20-19. Georgetown closed the gap to 21-20, but Rome powered the UConn attack with three kills in rapid succession, lifting the Huskies to a sweep to remain undefeated at home.
Rome led the way with a game-high 13 kills on an efficient hit percentage of .750. On her milestone night, Werkmeister finished with 12 kills, nine digs, and five aces. Kutlu conducted the offense with 31 assists, adding nine digs as well. Suhy contributed to the 13 team aces, adding four in the win.
Werkmeister became the 15th Husky to join the 1,000 kill club. UConn moves to 10-0 at home this season, winning 24 of their last 25 matches at the UConn Volleyball Center.
