Huskies Earn Hard-Fought Point at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw against the Providence Friars on Saturday night at Chapey Field. The Huskies earn a key point in the BIG EAST standings, moving UConn to 3-2-1 in conference play and 8-3-4 overall this season.
Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Durham was stout throughout the match, making six saves en route to his seventh clean sheet this season.
The match between UConn and Providence began with both teams vying for control. UConn's Durham made an early crucial save in the 13th minute, stopping a shot from Providence's Sam Montalto. UConn had opportunities from set pieces, including three corner kicks, but was unable to capitalize. The first half concluded scoreless, with multiple fouls and two yellow cards issued, reflecting a physical first 45 minutes.
The second half between the Huskies and Providence remained scoreless, with both defenses holding firm. Providence tested Durham early with a shot in the 46th minute, but the New York native was up to the task with a save. UConn's Sabri Hanni also attempted to break the deadlock with a shot inside the box in the 49th minute, but his effort missed the target. Sophomore forward Evan Pickering had an opportunity in front of goal for the Huskies in the 60th minute that was saved by Providence's goalkeeper Ryan Carney, maintaining the stalemate. Despite several shots and corner kicks from both sides, neither team managed to find the back of the net, concluding the match at 0-0, earning each side a point in the conference standings.
Nicolas Tomerius and Marco Valentic each tallied two shots, with one shot on goal apiece. Hanni added three shots, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.
