Huskies Hold Strong Late to Defeat Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – No. 8 UConn women's hockey defeated the Mercyhurst Lakers, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Huskies received contributions from four different goal scorers in the win, moving UConn to 5-2-1 overall this season.
The first period began with UConn establishing an early lead against Mercyhurst as senior forward Megan Woodworth netted her third goal of the season midway through the first period.
The Huskies extended their advantage with four minutes remaining in the first period. Junior defender Maya Serdachny found the back of the net for the second consecutive game, making it 2-0 in favor of the Huskies.
Mercyhurst responded late in the period, trimming into the Huskies lead, making it 2-1 with under a minute to go in the period. UConn took the one goal advantage into the first intermission. Shots favored the Huskies in the first period, 10-8.
Mercyhurst leveled the score six minutes into the second period, knotting the game at 2-2.
UConn responded quickly with sophomore forward Claire Murdoch scoring her second goal of the season just 85 seconds after Mercyhurst tied the score, putting the Huskies back in front, 3-2.
Junior forward Julia Pellerin netted what would eventually become the game-winning goal with under a second remaining in the second period, making it 4-2. For Pellerin, it is her second game-winning goal this season. The goal gave UConn a two-goal advantage going into the third period. Shots heavily favored the Huskies in the second period, 17-4.
Mercyhurst did not go quietly, once again trimming into the UConn advantage with a goal five minutes into the third period, making it 4-3.
UConn netminder Tia Chan stood strong in the final 15 minutes, denying multiple attempts from Mercyhurst to tie the game. 14 of Chan's 24 saves came in the third period.
