ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 7 UConn women's hockey fell to St. Cloud State, 4-2 on Saturday at Torrey Arena. The Huskies fall to 0-2 this season.
St. Cloud jumped out to an early lead with an even strength goal in the opening five minutes of the game.
UConn leveled the score at 1-1 just four minutes later with freshman forward Caileigh Tiller recording her first collegiate goal. Tiller has recorded points in each of her first two games in a UConn uniform.
St. Cloud regained the lead with just two seconds remaining in the first period, making it 2-1.
St. Cloud carried its one-goal advantage into the first intermission. They held a 9-7 edge in shots during the opening period.
St. Cloud extended its lead with two quick goals in a 40-second span early in the second period, putting the Huskies down 4-1.
The rest of the second period was marked by penalties, with both teams whistled for five penalties over the final seven minutes of the frame. St. Cloud kept its three-goal cushion going into the second intermission. Shots favored the home team in the second period, 11-8.
UConn began to chip away at the deficit midway through the third period, as senior captain Livvy Dewar scored her first goal of the season to make it 4-2. The Huskies continued to push to close the gap, but St. Cloud goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö stifled UConn's attack.
UConn was outshot 35-26 by St. Cloud, including a 15-11 margin in the third period. The Huskies went 0-for-2 on the power play while killing off all four of St. Cloud's opportunities. St. Cloud won 26 faceoffs to UConn's 21.
Caileigh Tiller scored and finished with a team-high four shots. Dewar added a goal on two shots. Julia Pellerin recorded a point in her second consecutive game and won 3 of 4 faceoffs. Netminder Taylor Belchetz finished with a season high 31 saves.
