STORRS, Conn. — UConn women's volleyball took down the Seton Hall Pirates in four sets (25-11, 25-27, 25-16, 25-19) on Friday at the UConn Volleyball Center.
UConn dominated the first set against Seton Hall, capitalizing on a strong serving performance to secure a 25-11 victory. Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) and Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) each delivered two service aces, contributing to UConn's momentum. The team also benefited from effective blocking, with Audrey Rome and Werkmeister combining for critical blocks that stifled Seton Hall's attack. Maria and Brenna Wyman (Lousiville, Ky.) sealed the frame, with two more aces each to seal the frame.
In a tightly contested second set, UConn and Seton Hall traded leads. Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) and Loren Winn (Dallas, Texas) poured in multiple kills to keep the Huskies in front 11-8. Despite UConn's efforts, including an ace by Werkmeister, Seton Hall capitalized on UConn's attack errors to take an 18-15 lead. Winn and Hanna Tylska (Sroda Wielkopolska, Poland) brought the Huskies to set point at 24-23, but the Pirates battled back, thanks to multiple kills from Darian Safian to take the second set, 27-25.
UConn stayed hot on the service line to take an early 7-5 lead, with Werkmeister firing in two consecutive lasers. After the Pirates evened the score at 12-12, the Huskies went on a 5-0 run, paced by kills from Winn and Maria, and another ace from Wyman. UConn rode the momentum throughout the frame, stringing together another five-point run at the end of the set, capped by an ace from McKenna Brand (Lucas, Texas) that gave the Huskies a 25-16 set victory.
UConn quickly capitalized on multiple Pirate service errors to pull ahead 7-3. Tylska and Anna Herman (Vincennes, In.) each contributed significantly with multiple kills to build the UConn lead. Werkmeister, Tylska, and Maria fueled the Huskies in the fourth, constructing a 19-12 lead. Multiple aces from Asli Subasili brought the Pirates to within three. However, Werkmeister and Tylska slammed the door in the fourth, lifting UConn to its first conference win of the season.
Tylska led the way with the Huskies with 16 kills at an efficient .560 hit percentage. Werkmeister added 12 kills and tied a career-high with seven aces. Suhy anchored the defense with a career-high 16 digs. UConn's 16 aces tied a season-high, matching the mark set against South Dakota on September 4th.
UConn will host St. John's tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm at the UConn Volleyball Center.
