STORRS, Conn. – UConn volleyball is looking to bounce back this weekend after dropping its first two BIG EAST matches on the road against DePaul and Marquette. The Huskies will welcome Seton Hall and St. John's to the UConn Volleyball Center. UConn will face the Pirates on Friday at 5:00 pm and take on the Red Storm on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
Scouting the Huskies (11-3, 0-2 BIG EAST)
Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) began conference play strongly last weekend, with 20 kills against DePaul and 12 kills against Marquette. Werkmeister leads the Huskies with 3.67 kills per set. Doga Kutlu (Ankara, Turkey) directs the UConn offense, averaging 8.73 assists per set and ranking fifth in the conference. Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) has been a key contributor for the Huskies. Rome has tallied 110 kills this season (2.12 per set) and leads UConn's defense with 43 total blocks. Her .386 hitting percentage ranks third in the BIG EAST. Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) heads into the weekend with 117 kills, surpassing her previous season total of 110.Â
UConn ranks second in the conference in team hitting percentage (.266) and second in service aces (2.15 per set). The Huskies aim to continue their success at the UConn Volleyball Center, where they have won 21 of their last 22 matches.
Opposition Research:
UConn welcomes Seton Hall to Storrs on Friday afternoon. The Huskies and Pirates split their meetings last season. UConn defeated Seton Hall in Storrs in four sets, while the Pirates swept the return match in South Orange. UConn leads the series 22-17 overall, with the Pirates winning five of the last six meetings. The Hall finished 12-17 last season, going 6-12 in conference play.
Seton Hall (6-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) visits UConn seeking its first conference win. Last weekend, the Pirates lost Big East matches to Georgetown and Villanova. Sadie Reich leads the Seton Hall offense with 175 kills (3.65 per set). Reich was named Big East Freshman of the Week on September 22nd after a 23-kill performance against Maryland and a 19-kill effort in a win over Coppin State. Asli Subasili anchors the Pirate defense, averaging 1.10 blocks per set, which ranks fifth in the conference. Seton Hall has been strong on the service line, averaging 1.88 aces per set, placing third in the conference behind Providence and UConn.Â
The Huskies will host St. John's on Saturday afternoon to conclude the weekend. St. John's (4-11, 0-2 BIG EAST) is also seeking its first conference victory after losses to Villanova and Georgetown. The Red Storm will play Providence on Friday night before heading to Storrs.Â
UConn and St. John's faced off three times last season. The Huskies won the first two games, while St. John's beat UConn in the NIVC Great 8. UConn leads the overall series 20-15, with the teams splitting the last six matchups. The Red Storm finished last season with a record of 24-13, going 10-8 in conference play.Â
Erin Jones has starred for St. John's this season. Jones leads the conference with four triple-doubles and tops the Red Storm with 177 kills and 22 aces. She ranks second on the team in assists (168) and digs (137). Jones was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on September 15th after averaging 3.23 kills per set, 3.69 assists per set, and 2.46 digs per set in the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic.Â
