Volleyball Defeats Georgetown in Regular Season Finale

WASHINGTON, D.C.—UConn women's volleyball defeated Georgetown (25-20, 25-21, 27-29, 25-23) in four sets on Saturday night in the regular season finale for both teams.
Brenna Wyman and McKenna Brand each chipped in aces, powering the Huskies to a 7-5 lead. Georgetown regained the advantage, grabbing a 14-10 lead thanks to kills from Dionna Mitchell and Kamryn Lee-Caracci. The Huskies cut the deficit to 15-14, capitalizing on multiple Georgetown errors. Emma Werkmeister pulled the visitors level at 16-16, and Brand pushed Georgetown to call a timeout after her second and third aces of the set put UConn back in front 18-16. Ayva Cebollero and Eli Adams contributed to a 6-0 run from the Huskies to extend the lead to 20-16 with a kill apiece. Werkmeister and Adams combined for a rejection, anchoring the UConn defense to fuel the visitors to a first set victory.
Werkmeister fired in her 68th ace of the season to put UConn ahead 5-2. The Hoyas responded with six of the next seven points, pushing the Huskies into a timeout with 10-7 advantage. Back home in the DMV area, Grace Maria fired in consecutive aces to put UConn in front 12-10. Jess Perry added to the lead for the Huskies, notching her first kill of the night, extending the UConn advantage to 17-13. Cebollero and Rome combined on a block to push the Husky lead to 23-18. Georgetown cut the lead to three, but multiple miscues pushed UConn to a two-set-to-none lead, taking the second frame 25-21.
Mitchell recorded two early terminations to put the Hoyas in front 4-1 in the opening moments of the third set. Werkmeister jumpstarted a UConn run with two kills, and Adams fired in UConn's ninth ace of the night to even the score at 7-7. The Huskies made plays on both ends, with Maria firing in her fourth ace of the night and Adams adding a solo block to push UConn to a 15-13 advantage. Two more kills from Werkmeister stretched the UConn lead to 20-16. A rejection from Rome pushed the Huskies to 23-18, but the Hoyas battled back with a 6-0 run, capped off by a Samantha Soderlund ace to go in front 24-23. Werkmeister's 400th kill of the season tied the score at 25-25, but Georgetown clawed back for a 29-27 set victory.
The sides traded points in the fourth, with Werkmeister and Soderlund powering their respective attacks to even the score 8-8. Mitchell and Berkeley Ploder fueled a 4-0 run to push Georgetown to 12-8 advantage. Adams and Doga Kutlu teamed up for a block, and Kutlu fired in an ace to tie the score 16-16. UConn responded to a Georgetown 3-0 run with three consecutive poins to bring the visitors even at 21. Hanna Tylska brought the Huskies to set point, where Rome would finish it to lift UConn to a four-set road victory to close the season.
Werkmeister tallied a match-high 19 kills, adding 10 digs as well. Kutlu stuffed the stat sheet with 36 assists, eight digs and six kills. The Huskies tallied 13 aces as a team. Mitchell led the Hoyas with 15 kills.
