BOYDS, Md. – UConn men's soccer was defeated by the Georgetown Hoyas in the BIG EAST Championship game, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The loss puts UConn at 11-4-4 on the year with hopes of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The first half between UConn and Georgetown concluded with neither team managing to find the back of the net. UConn's Marco Valentic tested Georgetown's defense early with a shot on goal in the first minute of the match, but his effort was saved. Georgetown had multiple attempts, including a near miss in the 5th minute with a shot that hit the right woodwork. Both goalkeepers were active, each making crucial saves to keep the score level at 0-0 by halftime. Shots were even at four a-piece in the first half.
Both teams came out in the second half pushing for the game's opening goal, as each side tested the opposing goalkeepers in the half's opening 15 minutes.
Georgetown found the game's opening goal off a corner kick in the 66th minute, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. Georgetown doubled their lead just one minute later, putting the Huskies behind 2-0 in the span of two minutes.
UConn did not go quietly as graduate midfielder Balthazar Saunders scored a beautiful goal in the 72nd minute with a curling strike into the far corner of the goal, beating the stretched hands of the Hoyas goalkeeper, making it 2-1.
Georgetown restored their two-goal lead just two minutes later in the 73rd minute, putting the Huskies down 3-1.
