STORRS, Conn. – The No. 13 overall seeded UConn men's soccer team is set to face Cornell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, November 23. Kickoff is set for 2:00pm at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. TICKETS
UConn earned the No. 13 overall seed and a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament after posting an 11-4-4 overall record this season. The Huskies will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament under fourth year head coach Chris Gbandi and first for the program since 2018.
A week ago, the Huskies reached the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the first time since 2011 after defeating a tough Akron side, 2-1, in the semifinal. UConn ultimately fell to Georgetown in the final, 3-1. Both Akron and Georgetown also secured top 16 seeds in the NCAA Tournament alongside UConn.
A Look at Cornell
The Cornell Big Red (14-3-2) defeated Lafayette, 4-0 to advance to the second round of the tournament. Cornell is making their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance and its third in the last four seasons. The Big Red are coached by John Smith in his ninth season on East Hill. Cornell fell to Princeton in the Ivy League Championship last week, 2-0. The Big Red boasted seven All-Ivy selections, led by first teamers Andrew Johnson, Connor Miller, and Westin Carnevale. Cornell finished in second place in the Ivy regular season standings with a 5-1-1 conference record.
Series History
The Huskies and Big Red have only met twice all-time on the pitch with each team earning one win. Their most recent matchup came in 2016, when UConn defeated Cornell, 2-0 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The first ever meeting between these two programs was back in 1995, with Cornell claiming a 3-2 victory in overtime at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. This will be the first ever NCAA Tournament meeting between the two programs.
