STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey and Stonehill skated to a 3–3 tie Tuesday evening at PeoplesBank Arena. Carlin Dezainde scored two goals, including the game tying goal in the third period.
In the first period UConn jumped out on the attack Tuesday evening. The Huskies speed and attack pressured the Stonehill defense resulting in the Skyhawks taking the first penalty of the night. While on the power play, the Huskies were able to take the lead as Kaden Shahan kept the puck in the offensive zone which was collected by Alexandre Blais who found Carlin Dezainde in the slot to give UConn the 1-0 lead. With the one goal lead, the Huskies defense held strong, holding Stonehill scoreless to enter the period break leading by one.
In the second period, a penalty by Ethan Whitcomb one minute into the start of the second period put the Huskies on the penalty kill. While on the penalty kill, Stonehill was able to find the back of the net for their first goal of the evening. The Huskies responded fast as just 37 seconds later, Kaden Shahan found the back of net to give UConn the 2-1 lead. The rest of the second period was all Skyhawks as they scored the next two goals which included one power play goal to take the 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
In the third period, the teams battled as UConn looked for the tying goal and Stonehill looked to extend their lead. Midway through the period, Kaden Shahan once again fought hard for the puck which found it's way to freshman Alexandre Blais who fired it to Carlin Dezainde who was able to beat the goalie on a back-hand shot for the game tying goal. The Huskies had opportunities to take the lead late in the period, but Stonehill's defense shut down the Huskies as the teams remained tied at three forcing a sudden death overtime.
The overtime period began with Huskies controlling the puck but were unable to find the back of the net. Following a back and forth overtime, Stonehill's best chance of the night came after a missed shot where the Skyhawks were all alone on the breakaway, but Kaden Shahan's all out effort to skate back and block the shot prevented an overtime winner. The Huskies best chance came with under a minute remaining as a shot by kai Janviriya found it's way past the goalie but was unable to cross the goal line. Neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game officially ended in a 3-3 tie.
