STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey defeated Merrimack College by a final of 5-2 to secure the weekend sweep. The Huskies received goals from Ryan Tattle, Jake Richard, Ethan Whitcomb, Mike Murtagh and Tristan Fraser.
The first period began with the physicality carrying over from the previous night. The Huskies and Warriors traded chances early, but strong goaltending kept the game scoreless. Late in the first period, Merrimack found the back of the net first as they were able to fire a puck through multiple defenders and beat Tyler Muszelik for the first goal of the night. Four minutes later, the Huskies strong forecheck forced a turnover where the loose puck was collected by Joey Muldowney who fired it to Ryan Tattle for the goal tying the game at one. Neither team was able to take the lead in the remaining minutes as they entered the break tied at one.
The second period was all UConn as their offense found their stride. The Huskies speed and physicality overpowered the Warriors and midway through the period the Huskies were able to draw a penalty for their second power play of the night. On the ensuing faceoff, just three seconds into the power play, Joey Muldowney found Jake Richard for the goal to give UConn the 2-1 lead. One minute later, the Huskies added another as Ethan Whitcomb fired a shot top shelf beating Merrimack's netminder to give UConn the 3-1 lead. With the two-goal lead, the Huskies defense shined, shutting down the Warriors and holding them to just one goal heading into the third period.
The Huskies were able to extend their lead early in the third period, as Mike Murtagh positioned himself in front of the net and was able to collect the rebound and find the back of the net giving UConn the 4-1 lead. Merrimack's offense didn't stay quiet as they were able to respond cutting the UConn lead to two just 40 seconds after the Huskies goal. Midway through the third period, the Huskies forecheck shined once again as another Merrimack turnover was collected by Tabor Heaslip who found Tristan Fraser in the slot for the one-timer and UConn's fifth goal of the evening. The three-goal lead prove to be enough as the Huskies shut down the Warriors and secured the victory. Senior Tyler Muszelik made 36 saves in the win.
With the win, the Huskies finish the first half of the season with an overall record of 9-5-3 and a record of 7-3-1 in Hockey East action.
The Huskies will have a break ahead of them as they won't return to action until Dec. 31 as they take on LIU. Joey Muldowney will head overseas as he will participate in the Spengler Cup for Team USA.
