NEW YORK – UConn men's basketball freshman Braylon Mullins has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Dec. 8) morning. It is the first weekly honor for the conference's Preseason Freshman of the Year and comes on the heels of a breakout performance at No. 21 Kansas last Tuesday.
Mullins averaged 13.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in wins over the Jayhawks and East Texas A&M. He posted his first two double-figure scoring games as he returns from an injury that cost him the first six games of his rookie season.
Entering Allen Fieldhouse with only 10 career minutes under his belt, Mullins showed no signs of his age and pumped in a game-high 17 points with five rebounds and two steals to spark the Huskies to a comeback win. He went 6-of-12 from the floor in UConn's first win against Kansas, scoring nine in the second half including a pair of game-sealing free throws in the final second.
Mullins followed that with 10 points, all coming in the second half, on Friday in a wire-to-wire win over East Texas A&M. Through his first three career outings Mullins is averaging 9.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game as he ramps up following his injury.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday night when they face No. 15 Florida in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
