Bill Guerrero Named Senior Associate Athletic Director for Financial Affairs

UConn Director of Athletics David Benedict announced that Bill Guerrero, a 1993 graduate of UConn, has been named Senior Associate Athletic Director for Financial Affairs. Guerrero will provide oversight of athletic business operations, with an emphasis on enhancing operational efficiencies, strategically managing fiscal affairs and navigating fiscal operations in the rapidly evolving collegiate sports landscape.

Guerrero comes to UConn with over 25 years of direct financial, operational and athletic administration experience in higher education including 10 years as a chief financial officer with expertise in operational efficiency and financial sustainability. He assumes his new role with UConn after three years at the University of Bridgeport where he served as the Vice President for Finance and the Chief Financial Officer. He also served on the President's cabinet, being present at board of trustee meetings while acting as the liaison to the business and finance, investment and audit committees.
He worked to achieve positive margins in each of his three years as CFO of the distressed university since its acquisition by Goodwin University, exceeding expectations for a financial turnaround. He spearheaded growth through resource allocation to restart the endowment, upgrade facilities such as residence halls, academic buildings, and athletic facilities through collaborative budgeting process and the issue of a $47M Social Bond, which was the first in the State of Connecticut.
Prior to his time at UB, Guerrero spent a year at Springfield College in the role of Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer. He helped lead the charge to issue one of the few Green Bonds in the higher education sector, facilitating a $120M bond for Springfield College to fund the construction of the new Silver Health Sciences Center. He also served on the President's cabinet and was the liaison to the finance and investment committees.
Guerrero spent four years as the Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer at Ithaca College where he worked closely with campus stakeholders on master plan updates and five-year capital priorities, including upgrades to the athletic facilities. He was an integral part of the annual Cortaca Game between Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland being played at Metlife Stadium in 2019, which broke the Division III football game attendance record (45,161).
He served as the business manager and CFO for the Foote School in New Haven for a year after nearly two years as the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer and CFO at Albertus Magnus College. He helped established a strategic plan for future short-term capital projects to enhance enrollment and net-tuition revenue including athletic facility upgrades including acting as project manager on a new multi-purpose turf field.
He spent two years at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx, NY from 2013 through 2015, where he served as the Director of Programs and Campus Operations. Prior to that, Guerrero was the Executive Director of the Purchase College Association, Inc, at SUNY Purchase College, an entrepreneurial auxiliary service corporation, from 1999 through 2013 where he grew non-tuition revenue into a $17 million customer-focused organization to compliment state-support funding which included Purchase Park 2 Fly, a $1M discount airport parking business. He received SUNY Chancellor's Award in Professional Service in 2011.
In addition to his work in finance at SUNY Purchase College, Guerrero also held several coaching positions within the athletic department. He served as the head women's volleyball coach in 2000 and was the Assistant Softball Coach from 1999-2001, helping to start the school's softball program. He moved on to serve as the Head Baseball Coach from 2001 through 2013. He led the team to the conference playoffs and ECAC playoffs in 2011 and 2013, and was named the Skyline Conference and Purchase College SUNY 2013 Coach of the Year.
Guerrero graduated from UConn in 1993 with his bachelor's degree in communications. He would go on to earn his MBA in finance from Sacred Heart University in 1997 and is completing his DBA in finance from Grand Canyon University.
He has certifications from the University of Chicago in psychology of finance (2022), from Columbia University in mergers and acquisitions (2022), Harvard Business School in disruption strategy (2017) and Villanova University in project management executive (2002).
He has also garnered teaching and adjunct professor experience at the University of Bridgeport in the Masters of Business Administration program, at Albertus Magnus College in the Masters of Leadership program, at Montclair State University in the Masters of Higher Education Leadership program and at SUNY Purchase College in the undergraduate liberal arts programs.
He is an an active member of the EACUBO (Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers) Board Member, the national organization for higher education CFO's, annual mentor and supporter UConn's Werth Institute, and on the Leadership Council for SwipeOutHunger, the national organization combating food insecurity in higher education.
