Huskies Suffer Setback at Texas A&M

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The UConn women's soccer team (1-1) suffered a 2-1 defeat against Texas A&M (2-0-2) in front of 6857 on Saturday night at Ellis Field.Â
UConn started the first half with an early shot attempt by Alayna Taylor, which was saved by Texas A&M's goalie. The half saw a back-and-forth exchange with Texas A&M taking an initial lead in the 25th minute through a goal by Trinity Buchanan. UConn evened up the match on a long free kick goal from graduate student Kaitlyn Richins. The Layton, Utah native bombed a free kick from just inside midfield, over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to even up the match, 1-1.
The second half began with the Huskies pressing early as Richins took a shot, but it was saved by Texas A&M's goalkeeper. The defensive efforts from UConn remained strong until Texas A&M took the lead with a goal by Taylor Jernigan in the 86th minute Although UConn continued to challenge with shots from Alexandra Taylor and Taylor Jenkins, they were unable to find an equalizer.Â
Richins scored the only goal for the Huskies, leading with two shots on goal. Jenkins and Farrah Stephens-Martin each contributed one shot during the match. Ava Yamas made her second start in goal for the Huskies and faced 12 shots.Â
In their next game, the Huskies will return home to face Brown on Thursday, Aug. 28. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
