NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (2-2-1) posted a 1-0 shutout victory at Yale on a comfortable Thursday evening at Reese Stadium.
The Huskies dictated play for the majority of Thursday's action and created quite a few quality scoring opportunities.Â
Chioma Okafor wreaked havoc on the Yale defense with a team-best five shots and two of them on goal. Okafor and junior Anaya Johnson linked up for a give-and-go in the first minute of the match and Okafor just pulled her shot wide of goal.Â
Yale had a chance to take the lead in the 17th minute with a penalty kick but freshman Ava Yamas stood tall and made a diving stop to keep the game even.
The Huskies quickly jumped in front in the early stages of the second half with Anaya Johnson serving a ball perfectly into the side of goal in the 48th minute. It is the first goal of the season for the midfielder.Â
Yamas and the UConn defense posted its third shutout of the season and Franklin, Tenn. product made a career-high four stops in the triumph.
The goalkeeper made a great leaping save with just under 16 minutes remaining in regulation to keep the Huskies up a goal.Â
The Huskies finished the game with a 13-8 shot advantage and 6-4 shots on goal edge.
Next up, the Huskies look to keep the momentum going with another road contest next Thursday, Sept. 11 at Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
