Huskies Defeat Providence, Improve to 8-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. โ University of Connecticut defeated Providence 2-1 on Friday following a 3-1 shootout win for the Huskies. UConn finished with an 18-9 shot advantage, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
The Huskies generated more shooting volume, finishing with 18 shots and nine on goal while Providence had nine shots and five on goal. Providence's goalkeeper was credited with eight saves, compared with four for Natalie Mckenna, as UConn's edge in attempts came in a one-goal game.
Olivia McKenna scored UConn's goal with no time on the clock to force overtime. Lucy Zich led the Huskies with six shots and put two on cage. Natalie Mckenna played all 86:32 in goal and recorded four saves while allowing one goal.
The Huskies absorbed early pressure as Natalie Mckenna saved two Lily Procaccianti shots in the first 2:17, and Faith Everett had UConn's lone attempt blocked midway through the first quarter. Providence broke through at 13:51 on Ariana Ftorek's goal from Florencia Talarico, sending the Huskies into the second quarter down 1-0.
UConn generated the main pressure of the second quarter with two penalty corners and four shots on goal in a 25-second span. Fien Hollander had two attempts saved by Ava Porter, while Zich and Olivia McKenna also put shots on frame. The quarter ended scoreless, with the Huskies still facing a 1-0 deficit.
The Huskies generated five shots in a scoreless third quarter, including three saved attempts in the opening three minutes. Milou Heuker's penalty corner led to Zich's shot on goal at 30:42, and Abby Davidson followed with two saved shots by 32:49. Heuker later had a shot blocked and Ellie Goldstein missed wide, leaving UConn down 1-0 entering the next quarter.
Olivia McKenna scored at 60:00 to bring UConn even at 1-1 in the fourth quarter. The quarter ended tied, 1-1 forcing a 15 minute sudden death overtime period.
UConn generated the last push of overtime, with Zich having a shot blocked at 69:40 before Heuker earned a penalty corner and Zich followed with a shot wide. Providence had created two penalty corners earlier in the extra session, but the teams went scoreless and remained tied 1-1.
In the shootout, UConn converted all three of its shootout attempts, with Davidson, Lene Reiche and Zich each scoring. Natalie Mckenna was in goal as Providence missed its final three attempts after opening with a make, and the Huskies finished the shootout with a 1-0 segment edge.
