EAST HARTFORD, Conn. โ UConn football lost to Syracuse 42-41in overtime Saturday afternoon. UConn scored 27 unanswered points across four scoring drives after falling behind 34-14, but a two point conversion in overtime sealed the win for Syracuse.
Cyncir Bowers rushed 16 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns and added two catches for 16 yards. Kalieb Osborne completed 19 of 39 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns. K'Von Sherman recorded 12 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. Trey Cornist scored twice, rushing for one touchdown and adding a 25-yard touchdown reception.
After UConn's opening series ended with Tommy Warner's punt, Syracuse drove 70 yards and scored at 11:45 on Amari Odom's 40-yard pass to Umari Hatcher, but Zakaih Saez blocked the extra-point try. The Huskies answered with a 75-yard drive that included Osborne's 30-yard completion to Ryder Treadway and ended with Osborne's 8-yard touchdown pass to Cam Abshire at 9:31, and Jack O'Connor's extra point put UConn ahead 7-6. The Huskies' defense forced a three-and-out on Syracuse's next possession, and the offense followed with an 11-play march into the red zone before an intentional-grounding penalty helped push the drive back and O'Connor missed a 40-yard field goal. Syracuse moved from its own 22 to the UConn 25 in the final minutes, but the first quarter ended with the Huskies in front 7-6.
Syracuse turned an early UConn pass interference penalty into points when Amari Odom hit Noah Meyers for a 4-yard touchdown at 13:39, and the extra point put the Orange ahead 13-7. UConn's next drive reached the UConn 21 before a fumble pushed the Huskies back and led to a punt. Syracuse answered from the UConn 47 with a drive capped by Odom's 6-yard touchdown run for a 20-7 lead. Julian Allen's 48-yard kickoff return gave the Huskies a start at midfield, but the threat ended on a sack and fumble at the Syracuse 21 before Odom later found Umari Hatcher for a 41-yard touchdown that made it 27-7. After Syracuse recovered another UConn fumble but missed a 46-yard field goal, Osborne led a late 72-yard drive that included completions to Javon Brown and Treadway before Cornist scored from 4 yards out with 11 seconds left, sending the game to halftime at 27-14.
Syracuse used the first possession of the third quarter to move 75 yards in 14 plays, converting three third downs before Amari Odom found Daunte Bacheyie for a 34-yard touchdown on fourth-and-23 at 7:58, and the extra point made it 34-14. UConn came back with a 14-play, 75-yard drive of its own, extending it on Osborne's 12-yard fourth-down completion to Shamar Porter and his 15-yard fourth-down run before Bowers scored from 10 yards at 3:46; the missed extra point left Syracuse ahead 34-20. Renick Dorilas intercepted Odom on the next Syracuse snap at the Syracuse 31, but the Huskies came away empty when a fourth-and-10 completion to Treadway gained 9 yards and turned the ball over on downs. Syracuse moved for one first down before K'Von Sherman broke up Odom's fourth-and-2 pass at the Syracuse 43 at :20, and UConn reached the Syracuse 7 on a 9-yard Bowers run and a 27-yard Osborne completion to Ky Wilson as the third quarter ended with Syracuse ahead 34-20.
UConn opened the fourth quarter at the Syracuse 7 and scored at 14:55 when Osborne found Xavier Watson for a 7-yard touchdown, with O'Connor's extra point making it 34-27. After a Syracuse punt, Osborne ran for 13 yards and Bowers broke a 71-yard touchdown run, and O'Connor's kick tied the game at 34-34 with 11:52 left. Syracuse moved from its 25 to the UConn 7 on the next possession, but Jayden Price intercepted Amari Odom at the 1 to keep the game tied. The Huskies later crossed midfield before turning it over on downs at the Syracuse 38, and Syracuse reached the UConn 26 before Shay Barker missed a 44-yard field goal as time expired, sending the game to overtime tied 34-34.
Overtime began tied at 34, and UConn needed just two plays to score when Osborne hit Cornist for a 25-yard touchdown before O'Connor's kick made it 41-34. Syracuse moved from the UConn 25 to the 8 after two Tylik Hill runs and a face-mask penalty, but Sherman sacked Amari Odom for a 10-yard loss and a fumble that went out of bounds. After an incompletion on third-and-17, Odom connected with Umari Hatcher for a 17-yard touchdown on fourth down, and Odom's successful rush on the conversion gave Syracuse a 42-41 final.
