No. 12 UConn Blanks No. 9 Clarkson, Sweep Weekend Series

STORRS, Conn. – No. 12 UConn women's hockey scored four power play goals to defeat No. 9 Clarkson, 4-0 on Saturday at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. The victory completed a weekend sweep for the Huskies, who improved to 2-2 overall on the season.
Sophomore goaltender Taylor Belchetz was outstanding in net for the Huskies, making a career high 43 saves en route to the first shutout of her career.
After Clarkson was called for the game's first penalty with just under six minutes remaining in the first period, UConn's point-leader, Claire Murdoch opened the scoring with her second goal of the season, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Murdoch has registered a point in each of UConn's first four games this season.
The Huskies took the goal-advantage into the first intermission, despite Clarkson holding a 13-7 advantage in shots in the opening period.
Junior forward Sadie Hotles doubled UConn's lead just three minutes into the second period, scoring her first goal of the season just seven seconds into the power play to make it 2-0.
Midway through the second period, the Huskies capitalized on another Clarkson penalty, with junior forward Ellie Markakis scoring her first career goal to extend UConn's lead to 3-0. Markakis finished with a goal and an assist for her first career multi-point game.
Belchetz continued to turn away Clarkson chances in the closing minutes of the second period, helping the Huskies carry a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. The Golden Knights held a 13-12 edge in shots in the second frame.
Belchetz continued to handle Clarkson's pressure in the third period, making 17 saves while the Huskies blocked several looks in front of her.
Freshman forward Caileigh Tiller scored the Huskies fourth goal of the game with five minutes left to play on another power play opportunity. Tiller now leads the Huskies roster with three goals this season. She has recorded a point in each of UConn's first four games this year.
The Huskies were outshot 43-28 but allowed no goals on Clarkson's 43 shots. The Huskies went 4-for-4 on the power play, while Clarkson had no power-play opportunities. UConn's four power play goals are the most in a single game in program history. The Huskies blocked 14 shots compared with Clarkson's nine.
Belchetz finished with a career-high total of 43 saves. Murdoch scored the game-winning power-play goal and added five shots and two blocked shots. Caileigh Tiller tallied a power-play goal and an assist while winning nine faceoffs. Laurie Aubin recorded two assists and put four shots on goal, marking a season high.
