STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women'soccer team (3-2-5, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) scored a 2-1 victory against Providence (2-2-7, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) in front of a record crowd at Morrone Stadium on Saturday night.ย
The 3,036 fans that turned out for the match set a record at the new Morrone Stadium (Opened in 2021).
UConn gave the crowd something to cheer about early with Tiana Righetti scoring her first career goal at the 2:31 mark in the match. The sophomore created a takeaway inside the box and immediately deposited her shot in the back of the net.ย
Providence evened the score in the 29th minute on a scrum in the box that eventually led to a tally from Courtnee Pickles.ย
The game remained tied until the 67th minute when another Husky grabbed their first career goal as a Husky. Junior Chloe Shimkin received a pass from Anaya Johnson at the top of the box and rifled home a shot past the keeper to give UConn the lead and eventual win.ย
Goalkeeper Ava Yamas made six saves on the night including a leaping save with under eight minutes left in regulation that would have tied the game.ย
Despite not seeing her name on the score sheet, Se-Hanna Mars had a good night for the Huskies with three dangerous shots.
UConn snapped a stretch of three-straight games without a goal and scored multiple goals for the first time since defeating LIU, 5-1, on September 6.ย
