STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey dropped game one of the two game series vs. Massachusetts Friday night by a final of 5-1. The teams entered the second period tied at one but then Massachusetts scored four unanswered goals.
The first period began with Massachusetts pressuring the Huskies and maintaining long offensive ice time. The Huskies penalty kill was on display early as back-to-back penalties by UConn forced them to play 5-on-3 hockey. The Huskies penalty kill was able to successfully kill both penalties but shortly after returning to 5-on-5 hockey, Massachusetts fired a shot from the point that was able to find the back of the net. Later in the period, with the man advantage, UConn found the equalizer as Jake Richard ripped a shot that found its way past Hrabal of UMass. Neither team was able to find the back of the net again in the first period as they entered the break tied at one.
In the second period, the Huskies jumped on the attack but were unable to find the back of the net. The Huskies had multiple opportunities to take the lead but were unable to finish. Midway through the second period, Massachusetts took the lead to enter the period break leading by one.
The third period was all Massachusetts as they converted on a shorthanded goal and two power play goals to secure the 5-1 win.
