Huskies Fall to Iowa

TALLAHASSEE – Fla. – The UConn softball team fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 10-9 on Saturday afternoon at the JoAnne Graf Classic in Tallahassee, Florida.
Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) made her second consecutive start in the circle for the Huskies. Despite giving up three runs in the first inning, Bohmer settled in, retiring ten straight Hawkeye hitters. Bohmer ended up going 4.2 innings in the circle, giving up four runs, three being earned on four hits, adding a career high six strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning as the Huskies sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning. Kaitlyn Breslin (Hopkinton, Mass.) got UConn on the board, reaching on a fielding error which scored Ava Calciano (Lewes, Del.) from second base. Two batters later, Haley Coupal (North Attleboro, Mass.) singled to left center field, scoring Kaiea Higa (Maple Valley, Wash.) and Breslin. Bella Cruz (North Bellmore, N.Y.) capped off the Huskies big inning with a double to left field, scoring Coupal and Alexis Juhl (Waxhaw, N.C.), giving UConn an early 5-0 lead.
Iowa trimmed into UConn's lead in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run home run, making it 5-3.
The Huskies added to their lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three consecutive doubles. Higa got it started with a double to left center, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling (LaFayette, N.Y.). Breslin followed Higa with a double to left field, scoring Calciano and Higa. Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.) knocked in Breslin with a double to left center field, giving the Huskies a 9-3 advantage.
Iowa began to chip away at the UConn lead, scoring a run in the fifth and three in the sixth, making it 9-7.
Alexandra Bacher (Ridgefield, Conn.) came on in relief for Bohmer in the fifth inning, making her second appearance of the season. Bacher went just 0.1 inning giving up three runs on a pair of hits.
Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) came on in relief for Bacher in the sixth inning, making her second appearance this season. Walter closed out the game in the circle, going 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Iowa scored three runs, securing a walk-off victory over the Huskies.
