Huskies Victorious in Home Opener

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Stonehill Skyhawks, 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies move to 7-16 overall this season.
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh made her fifth start of the season for the Huskies. Koosh went 5.0 innings giving up a run on two hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
Stonehill scored the game's first run in the top of the 1st inning, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
UConn's offense quickly answered with a rally in the bottom of the 1st inning, scoring four runs, and sending ten batters to the plate. Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin got the Huskies on the board with a two-run single to center field, scoring Savannah Ring and Cat Petteys. Junior infielder Caylee De Meo followed Breslin with a two-run home run to right center field, her second homer of the season, pushing UConn's lead to 4-1.
Petteys extended the Huskies lead to 5-1 in the 4th inning with an RBI single to right field, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling.
In the 5th inning, freshman Emma Willers hit her first career home run, a two-run shot to center field, to make it 7-1.
Sophomore Stella Kiemele came on in relief for Koosh in the 6th inning, making her fifth appearance of the season. Kiemele faced just four batters before being relieved by sophomore Amber Bretton in the 6th inning, making her fifth appearance this season. Bretton went on to close the game out for the Huskies, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings.
Stonehill trimmed into UConn's lead in the 6th inning with two runs to make it 7-3, but Bretton managed to shut the door on the Skyhawks offense.

- Cat Petteys recorded her fourth straight multi-hit game, giving her eight this season. She has hits in six straight games.
- Caylee De Meo has multi-hit games in two of her last three games.
- Kaitlyn Breslin recorded back-to-back multi-RBI games, giving her seven this season.
- Emma Willers hit her first career home run. She has three extra base hits in her last three games and has an on-base of five straight games.

- UConn hit .500 with runners in scoring position.
