HookC Sweeps Doubleheader To Close Spring Break Trip

SAN JOSE - The UConn baseball team (12-13) completed a doubleheader sweep on Sunday with a 7-5 victory against San Diego State and a shutout, 8-0, win against San Jose State on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies utilized three home runs in game one including a pair of two-run home runs from junior captainTyler Minick in the first game of the twin bill.
Minick put the Huskies ahead with a two-run homer in the third inning. Cam Righi followed with solo shot as the Huskies hit back-to-back homers for the second-straight day.
Leading 3-2 in the fifth, Steve Thomas delivered a two-out, two-run single to give UConn a bit of breathing room. After the Aztecs responded with two runs in the sixth, Minick hit his second long ball of the day to push the lead to 7-4.
LHP Oliver Pudvar earned the victory working into the sixth inning on Sunday and Greg Shaw III was an important bridge to keep the Huskies ahead. Shaw got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh with just allowing one run to keep UConn ahead, 7-5.
Charlie Hale closed the game out with a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the year.Â
Hale then started game two and earned the victory on the bump. The RHP 6.1 shutout innings with just three hits allowed.Â
The game stayed tied 0-0 until the sixth when the Huskies tied their highest scoring inning of the season with eight runs coming across. Chase Taylor and Rob Rispoli started the rally with back-to-back singles to start the frame.
MInick lined a two-run single to right to give UConn to 2-0 advantage. Maddix Dalena came up with the big hit to provide insurance with a two-run double to the left center field alley.
Paxton Meyers closed out the win with 2.2 shutout innings and secured the Huskies second shutout of the season.
