UConn Drops Four-Set Match to DePaul

STORRS, Conn. - UConn fell 1-3 to DePaul on Saturday evening at the UConn Volleyball Center. The Huskies secured the second set in a marathon 40-38 finish and totaled 63 kills, 66 digs and 58 assists in the contest. UConn hit .262 on the night, compared to DePaul's .235 hitting percentage, while the Blue Demons finished with 62 kills.
In the first set, UConn forced extra points after falling behind 23-19, getting a Daca kill, a Daca ace and a Jensen-Courtney Grayson block during a push that tied the set at 23-23. Earlier, Grace Maria's serve helped UConn turn a 7-6 deficit into a 10-7 lead, with Maria recording two aces around kills from Daca and Einarsdottir. DePaul worked back through the middle of the set, tying it at 14-14 and later moving ahead 18-16 before UConn answered with kills from Jordyn Hughes and Grayson to stay within reach. Grayson tied the set again at 24-24, but DePaul scored the final two points to take the opening set, 26-24.
The Huskies earned the victory in a set two marathon that went to 40-38. UConn trailed 7-2 and 9-5 before Jensen served through five straight points, with Borowy adding two kills and Einarsdottir and Hughes combining on a block to give the Huskies an 11-9 lead. UConn continued to answer throughout the middle of the set with kills from Daca, Einarsdottir, Jensen, Grayson and Hughes before DePaul tied the set at 22-22 and took a 24-23 lead. Einarsdottir responded with a kill at 24-23, and UConn traded points deep into extra rallies before Grayson and Daca delivered the final three points.
A late UConn push brought the third set even at 24-24 after Einarsdottir's kill and a block by Grayson and Daca answered DePaul's 24-22 edge. Earlier, Hughes accounted for three of UConn's first five points on kills, with Jensen assisting each, as DePaul stayed in front through the opening stretch. UConn worked back from 15-12 to tie the set at 16-16, then came back again from 19-16 behind a DePaul service error, Hazuna Akishige's ace and another Hughes kill. The Blue Demons responded at the finish with a kill and a block to take the set 26-24.
In the fourth set, UConn battled back from a 16-8 deficit to pull within 19-17 before DePaul closed out the set, 25-20. The Huskies answered DePaul's opening points with a kill from Hughes and a finish by Borowy off an Akishige set to tie the set at 4-4, but the Blue Demons later built their lead. During UConn's response, Einarsdottir recorded a kill and service ace while her serve run also featured kills from Grayson and Daca. Akishige later added an ace before Borowy's kill from Jensen made it 19-17. UConn got as close as 22-19 on a block by Hughes and Einarsdottir, but DePaul scored three of the final four points to take the set and the match.
Borowy led the Huskies with 16 kills, followed by Hughes with 13 and Daca with 11. Daca also recorded three service aces, while Maria and Akishige each added two. Grayson led UConn with four blocks, followed by Jensen with three and Hughes with two. Jensen tallied 49 assists, while Akishige added six. Einarsdottir led the Huskies with 16 digs, followed by Jensen and Akishige with 13 apiece.
