Prior to UConn: Merklinger spent two seasons at Tennessee. He played four games for the Volunteers in 2025 and completed 13 of 24 passes for 173 yards and two scores. He completed nine of 14 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns against East Tennessee State. In 2024 he appeared in two games, passing for 48 yards and rushing for 22 yards. He Was a four-star recruit coming out of high school.
