James Doran is entering his 21st year with the University of Connecticut and has been elevated to Head Athletic Trainer with oversight of the Athletic Training staff and facilities. His primary sport responsibility is now with the men’s soccer team, managing the physical health and well-being of the student-athletes working in conjunction with the UConn Sports Medicine team.
Doran received his National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification credential in 1998. He is a member of the NATA and the American College of Sports Medicine. Doran served as president of the CT Athletic Trainers’ Association (CATA) from 2013-16. He is currently serving as a member of the Alliance for Intercollegiate Sports Medicine (AISM) Executive Committee. He was inducted into the CATA Hall of Fame in the spring of 2021.
Doran received his B.S. degree in Kinesiology from San Diego State University in 1998, completed an internship at the University of San Diego (1996-98) and received his M.S. degree in Exercise Science from the University of Wyoming in 2000.
He was the Associate Athletic Trainer for the University of Wyoming and was primarily responsible for the Cowboys Men’s Basketball and Women’s Tennis teams from 2000 to 2005.
Before being elevated to his current position, Doran spent 20 years as the Head Athletic Trainer for UConn Men’s Basketball. Along the way, Doran helped three elite staffs to four National Championships and five total trips to the Final Four. Most recently, the Huskies won back-to-back National Championships during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.Â
Doran married his wife, Annie, in August 2023. They reside in Manchester, Conn., and have one child, Maddie.
