STORRS, CT (Nov. 10) -- Sophomore Ron DAngelo (Massapequa, NY) scored two goals to help lead the University of Connecticut mens ice hockey team past Fairfield University, 7-2, on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up. With the win, the Huskies improved their record to 3-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the MAAC, while the Stags dropped their overall record to 1-5-0, 0-2-0 in the MAAC.
UConns Mike Boylan (Jr., Doylestown, PA) opened the scoring at the 12:48 mark of the first period on a slap shot from the point with assists from Eric Nelson (Fr., Big Lake, MN) and Ciro Longobardi (Sr., Wallingford, CT) on the power play.
Longobardi started UConn on a five-goal second period scoring spree in an eight minute time span. His power play tally came just 3:00 into the stanza on an assist from Mike Anderson (Sr., Springfield, MA). Kurt Kamienski (So., Pittsfield, MA) found the back of the net over a minute later with help from Anthony Switek (Fr., Philadelphia, PA) and Anders Johnson (Jr., North Kingston, RI). Matt Herhal (Jr., Pottstown, PA) then fed DAngelo the puck for his first goal of the night at the 5:49 mark. Three minutes later Nelson received a pass from Corey Salvatelli (Fr., Leominster, MA) across the blue line, and took a slap shot from the point for the fifth goal of the evening. Evan Schwarz (So., Shaker Heights, OH) ended UConns scoring for the second period at 10:48 with an assist from Boylan. Fairfield put themselves on the board at the 11:07 mark on a tally from Dan Cotter.
DAngelos second goal came off a Fairfield goalie save at the 15:37 mark of the third period. Michael Goldkind (Sr., Silver Spring, MD) and Herhal assisted on the goal. Nate Bauers recorded the Stags second goal of the night at 19:39.
UConns Jason Carey (Fr., Oakdale, MN) earned his first collegiate win in net recording 22 saves. Fairfields Bill Whitfield and Greg Norcross split time in net for a combined 17 saves.
Connecticut returns to the ice on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA.
