Third Period Rally Lifts UConn Past Holy Cross, 4-3

STORRS, Conn. - The men's ice hockey used three third period goals in a 4-3 come-from- behind win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival the College of the Holy Cross on Friday (Dec. 29) in the second game of the 2000 SNET UConn Classic in Storrs. Connecticut ended a three game losing streak, improving its record to 6-8- 2 overall, 6-5-1 in the MAAC, while Holy Cross falls to 3-11-1 overall, 3-7-1 in the MAAC.
Holy Cross opened the first period with two quick goals. Jeff Dams nailed the first one at the 5:47 mark, followed by a shot from Steve Sullivan, giving the Crusaders the 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes of play. UConn's Ron D'Angelo (Massapequa, NY) ended the period on a power play tally at the buzzer when he flicked the puck over Holy Gross goaltender Rick Massey from right in front of the net. Eric Goclowski (Hamden, CT) assisted on the goal.
The two teams played held each other scoreless in the second period with UConn dominating play out shooting Holy Cross, 13-5.
Holy Cross took a two-goal lead at the 3:59 mark of the third period on a tally by Tom Pawlak. Connecticut then went on to score the next three goals for the thrilling victory. Anders Johnson (North Kingston, RI) brought the Huskies within one at the 6:24 mark on a slap shot from inside the blue line. Matt Owens (Framingham, MA) and Trent Landry (Somerset, WI) assisted on the goal. Eric Nelson (Big Lake, MN) tied the game just over a minute later on a similar shot on the opposite side with help from Landry and Johnson. The game-winner came with 38 seconds remaining in the third period on a pass from Goclowski to Ciro Longobardi (Wallingford, CT) who was positioned between the face-off circles.
UConn's Artie Imbriano (Stoneham, MA) earned the win in net stopping 18 Crusader shots, while Rick Massey suffered the loss in goal posting 33 saves. Connecticut outshot Holy Cross, 37-21.
In the earlier action, Wayne State defeated Queen's University, 5-2, in exhibition play in the first game of the 2000 SNET UConn Classic.
UConn will face-off against Wayne State in the Championship game of the 2000 SNET UConn Classic on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. Holy Cross and Queen's University will pair-off in exhibition play in the Consolation game at 4:00 p.m. also in Storrs.
