Iona Tops UConn, 6-0, In Ice Hockey

STORRS, Conn. - Iona College shutout the University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team, 6-0, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Saturday evening in Storrs. UConn, dropping its last four of five games, falls to 5-8-2 overall, 5-5-1 in the MAAC, while Iona improves to 9-6-2 overall, 8-3-2 in conference action.
The Gaels opened the first period with three unanswered goals. Ryan Carter and Ryan Manitowich nailed the first two goals past UConn's keeper Artie Imbriano (Stoneham, MA) within the first 10:00 of play. After a Connecticut goalie change to Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN), Iona's Jean Paul Chaput scored on a power play opportunity.
UConn held Iona to only one goal in the second stanza on another shot by Manitowich giving the Gael's the 4-0 lead. Tim Krueckl and Stephen Frappier netted Iona's final tallies in the third period.
Mike Fraser earned the win in net fighting of 24 UConn shots, while Imbriano took the Husky's loss making only three saves to Carey's 22 stops in net.
Connecticut is off until December 29 when it will play host to the 2000 SNET UConn Classic Hockey Tournament held at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. UConn will face-off against MAAC opponent Holy Cross in the 7:00 p.m. game after Wayne State takes on Queen's University (Canada) in the 4:00 p.m. game.
