Longobardi Leads Huskies Past Sacred Heart

STORRS, Conn. - Ciro Longobardi (Wallingford, CT) scored one goal and assisted on another as the University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-2 come- from-behind win over Sacred Heart University at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs on Thursday night (Jan. 11).
With the win, UConn snaps its three game losing streak improving its record to 7-11- 2 overall, 7-5-1 in the MAAC, while Sacred Heart drops to 7-6- 3 overall, 4-5-3 in conference play.
Sacred Heart's Richard Naumann pushed the puck through UConn goalkeeper Jason Carey's (Oakdale, MN) legs for game's first goal of the night just 3:08 into the first period.
Michael Forsland gave the Pioneers the 2-0 lead with 40 second gone in the second stanza on a behind-the-back shot. UConn's Mike Boylan (Doylestown, PA) brought the score within one at the 12:46 mark. Longobardi and Eric Goclowski (Hamden, CT) assisted on the tally. Eric Nelson (Big Lake, MN) then nailed a shot off the opposite post to have Trent Landry (Somerset, WI) knock in the game-tying goal at 17:49 of the second period. Scott Brown (Blaine, MN) also assisted on the goal.
Goclowski passed the puck into the crease of the goal to Longobardi at the 6:13 mark of the third stanza. He flicked the puck over Sacred Heart keeper Eddy Ferhl for game- winner.
Carey recorded 17 saves in net for Connecticut, while Ferhl stopped 29 UConn shots. The Huskies outshot the Pioneers, 32-19.
Connecticut will face Army on Sunday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs.
