Huskies Advance to Hockey East Championship

BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn men's hockey team took down Boston College in overtime by a final of 4-3. Tristan Fraser scored the game winning goal just over one minute into the overtime period. The Huskies also received goals from Trey Scott, Ethan Whitcomb and Mike Murtagh.
The first period was a back-and-forth battle as both teams came out physical. The Huskies had the first opportunity of the evening as a holding call on Boston College gave them the man advantage. The Huskies power play kept the puck in the offensive zone and fired a barrage of shots at Boston College, but all attempts were turned away keeping the Huskies scoreless. Boston College had two opportunities to take the lead with the man advantage, but the Huskies penalty kill stayed strong. Boston College found the back of the net on the second power play, but the goal was instantly waved off due to goaltender interference. With time running down in the period, another penalty on UConn gave Boston College the man advantage, but the Huskies were able to kill of the first 20 seconds of the power play to enter the period break tied at one.
Early in the second period, Boston College took the lead as Dean Letourneau fired the puck into the back of the net on the power play. The Huskies bounced back quickly as Trey Scott fired a shot from the point which snuck through Louka Cloutier leg's and found its way into the back of the net tying the game at one. Later in the period another UConn penalty put Boston College on the power play and with the man advantage the Eagles scored their second of the night giving them the 2-1 lead. The Huskies once again bounced back this time as Mike Murtagh found Ethan Whitcomb in front of the net where the sophomore roofed it past Cloutier for the equalizer. Following the tying goal, the Huskies had a power play but were unable to find the back of the net keeping the score tied at two.
The third period began and it was all Huskies. UConn dominated the five-on-five play early looking to take the lead. Late in the third period with under ten minutes remaining, Tyler Muszelik made three big saves on a Boston College rush and on the ensuing counterattack, sophomore Mike Murtagh found the back of the net to give UConn the 3-2 lead. Later in the period, following another Boston College attack, the Eagles found the back of the net as an attempt to clear the zone failed and a one timer by the Eagles found its way past Muszelik for the game tying goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation as the teams entered a sudden death overtime period tied at three.
The overtime period began and from first puck drop it was all UConn. The Huskies collected the puck and after Tabor Heaslip kept the puck in the offensive zone, Tristan Fraser fired the puck towards the net and after two deflections, found the back of the net for the game winning goal.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will face off against Merrimack College in the Hockey East Championship game. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm.
