STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey dropped game two of the home opening weekend to Bowling Green 5-2. The Huskies finished with a 41-32 shots advantage but went 0-for-3 on the power play while Bowling Green scored twice on five chances.
UConn put 14 shots on goal in a scoreless first period, including four during its lone power play, but Jacob Steinman stopped each one to hold the Huskies scoreless. Bowling Green generated four shots on goal, all saved by freshman Veeti Louhivaara, and the teams went to the first intermission at 0-0.
The Huskies came out of intermission firing as junior Mike Murtagh scored the opening goal as he fought through traffic and pushed the puck past the netminder just 17 seconds into the period. The Huskies generated more shooting volume in the second period, recording 28 shot attempts to Bowling Green's 19. Bowling Green answered with Ty Higgins' power-play goal at 14:17, while UConn came up empty on its lone power play of the period resulting in a one-one tie headed into the third period.
At the conclusion of the second period, an Ethan Gardula penalty gave Bowling Green a man advantage to begin the third period. The Falcons were able to convert with time winding down on the power play, giving them the 2-1 lead. Shortly after a coach's challenge by Bowling Green was successful and junior Ethan Whitcomb was issued a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for spearing. The Huskies penalty kill was strong early and the Huskies were able to tie the game at two when Carter Sproule collected the loose puck and fired a shot top shelf for his first career goal and the game tying goal. With time running down on the major penalty, the Flacons were once again able to convert and regain the lead. Despite multiple attempts, the Huskies were unable to find the equalizer again as Bowling Green scored two empty net goals to seal the win.
UP NEXT: UConn will turn their attention to a two-game series vs. Colorado College beginning October 16 in Storrs.
