COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The United States Air Force Academy edged the University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team, 2-1, at the Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday (Jan. 6). The loss is UConn's third straight dropping its overall record to 6-11-2, while Air Force improves to 11-8-1.
UConn's Travis Wood (Seattle, WA) shot the puck into the upper right-hand corner of the net after he received a cross-ice pass from Ciro Longobardi (Wallingford, CT) just 2:58 into the game. Mike Boylan (Doylestown, PA) also received an assist on the goal.
Air Force opened the second period at the 3:25 mark on a power play goal by Scott Zwiers. The two teams played scoreless for the remainder of the stanza with Air Force out shooting Connecticut, 21-7.
The Falcon's notched a quick goal in the third period to seal the victory as Tom Starkey shot a rebounded puck over UConn keeper John Chain (Ardmore, PA) who got caught down after the original save.
UConn's Chain recorded 35 saves in net, while Air Force's Marc Kielkucki stopped 18 Connecticut shots. The Falcon's out shot the Huskies, 37-19.
UConn will play Sacred Heart on Thursday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. The game was switched from its original date of Feb. 10 in order to accommodate Mercyhurst's traveling schedule for a game that needed to be made up due to a snow cancellation from Nov. 22.
