Huskies Earn First Win of Season Over Findlay, 7-4

STORRS, CT (October 25) – Julie Marashio’s (Wayland, MA) hat trick plus one assist led the University of Connecticut women’s hockey team past the University of Findlay, 7-4, at the UConn Ice Arena on Thursday evening. The win marks the first of the season for the Huskies improving their record to 1-1-1, while Findlay drops to 1-3-0.
Findlay opened the scoring five minutes into the first period on a shot from Heidi Tallqvist. Connecticut then went on a three goal scoring spree to raise the score to 3-1. Allison Oropallo (Niskayuna, NY) netted the first tally with assists from Sarah Clark (West Roxbury, MA) and Marashio at the 9:31 mark. Two minutes later Megan McLeod (Livonia, MI) found the back of the net with help from Jacquelyn McGuire (Glenview, IL) and Sara Mahoney (Lynn, MA). Marashio scored her first goal of the night at 14:45. She was assisted by Caitlin Salazer-Reid (London, Ontario). Findlay brought the score within one with one minute remaining on the clock on a power play tally by Mellissa Oliver.
The Oilers’ Tracey Lowell began the second period scoring 1:40 into the period to even the game at three apiece. The Huskies Tiffany Owens (Belleville, MI) gave UConn the lead on a power play goal two minutes later. Erika Spaeth (Dallas, TX) and Laura Stosky (Edmonton, Alberta) assisted on the goal. Marashio scored the game–winner at the mid point of the stanza aided by Stosky. The Oilers’ final goal of the game came during a power play with ten seconds left in the period scored by Tallqvist.
Marashio netted her last goal at the 3:37 mark of the final period. Clark and Stefanie Snow (Bedford, NH) assisted on the score. Kimberly Berry (Haverhill, MA) secured the lead with the team’s seventh goal less than a minute later with an assist from Owens.
Connecticut’s Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) had 18 saves in goal and recorded her first collegiate win in net. Samantha Dexter (Gloucester, MA) played the third period for the Huskies stopping 10 shots on goal. Findlay’s Nickie Kelly and Erin Blair split time in net for a combined 16 saves. The Oilers’ outshot the Huskies, 32-23, despite the loss.
Connecticut will face-off against Boston College for its first ECAC League game on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Conte Forum in Boston, MA.
