Connecticut Women's Ice Hockey Announces Recruiting Class

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team and head coach Heather Linstad have announced that 16 recruits have committed to attend the University of Connecticut. Scheduled to enroll at UConn for the 2001 fall semester: Lisa Beck (Tolland, CT), Kim Berry (Haverhill, MA), Sarah Clark (Brookline, MA), Shannon Connolly (Baldwinsville, NY), Samantha Dexter (Gloucester, MA), Julie Marashio (Wayland, MA), Jacquelyn McGuire (Glenview, IL), Megan McLeod (Livonia, MI), Shannon Murphy (Dayville, CT), Allison Oropallo (Saratoga Springs, NY), Tiffany Owens (Plymouth, MI), Caitlin Salazer- Reid (London, Ontario), Stefanie Snow (Bedford, NH), Erika Spaeth (Dallas, TX), Laura Stosky (Edmonton, Alberta), and Angie Wallace (Mullet Lake, MI).
Lisa Beck is one of two players who hails from Connecticut. A defenseman, Beck is a native of Tolland and attended Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, RI.
Kimberly Berry, a native of Haverhill, MA, played her high school career at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA. A forward, Berry was twice named a First Team All-Star selection for the New England Prep School Girls Ice Hockey Association (NEPSGIHA). While at Cushing she broke the school record in career points with over 200 tallied. During the 1999-00 season, she was awarded the team's plus/minus award, she led the team in goals (34) and assists (34), and was named Offensive Player of the Year. In 2000-01, Berry again received the team's plus/minus award and was also selected the Most Valuable Player. Berry was a member and leading scorer for the 15 and under USA Hockey National Championship Team, a two-time USA Hockey Women's Festival member and a three-time member of the USA Hockey Development Hockey Camp at Lake Placid.
Sarah Clark is a native of Brookline, MA. Clark, a forward, played her high school career at Brookline High School.
Shannon Connolly is a forward from Baldwinsville, NY. In Connolly's three seasons as part of the Syracuse Stars Midget A Team, they were three-time NY State Champions and one-time Empire State Champions and National Champions. She netted 256 points on 130 goals and 126 assists.
Samantha Dexter comes to UConn from the St. Mark's School in Southborough, MA and is a native of Gloucester, MA. A goalie, Dexter was named 2000-01 Team MVP and received All-ISL honors for both the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons.
Julie Marashio is a native of Wayland, MA and is entering her sophomore year at UConn academically. Marashio sat out her freshman season due to an injury, and will return to the ice with freshman eligibility. She played her high school career at Acton/Boxboro High School in MA.
Jacquelyn McGuire is a forward from Glenview, MI and attended Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA. While at Lawrence, McGuire notched 86 goals and 51 assists for 137 career points, and earned 12 varsity letters in the four years she attended in ice hockey, lacrosse, field hockey and cross-country. She was the leading scorer and captained both her junior and senior years, she earned ISL All- league honors in 1999 and 2001 and ISL Honorable Mention in 1998 and 2000, and the Spartans secured the ISL Championship Title during her freshman and sophomore seasons. McGuire also played for the New England Hockey Night in Boston team in 2000.
Megan McLeod is a native of Livonia, MI. For the past two seasons, McLeod has played for the Belle Tire Girls 19-under Team as a forward where she tallied 69 goals and 67 assists for 136 points. The 2000-01 team was state (MI) champions, while the 1999-00 team won the state (MI) and national championships. A member of the Midwest Hockey Night in Boston team in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, McLeod was named the Midwest MVP in 2000. She was also selected to play at the USA Hockey National Development Team Camp in Lake Placid, NY in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Shannon Murphy is a native of Dayville, CT. She was a member of the Burrillville High School in Rhode Island where she was the starting goalie for the boy's varsity team.
Allison Oropallo is a native of Saratoga Springs, NY. A forward, she played two seasons for Kimball Union Academy recording 70 goals and 60 assists. Oropallo has played with the Assabet Valley Midget I Team for the past two seasons and was a three-time member of the Empire State Games Select Team at the New York State Tournament. This past year, she was a member of the Hockey Night in Boston New England Team. This summer she will skate at the Junior National Olympic Development Camp in Lake Placid, NY.
Tiffany Owens is a native of Plymouth, MI and also a member of the Belle Tire Girls 19-under Team. A forward, Owens helped her team win the Michigan State Championship in both 2000 and 2001, and the National Championship in 2000. She recorded 74 goals and 73 assists for 147 points in her two-year career as a Belle Tire.
Also attending UConn will be Caitlin Salazer-Reid and Erika Spaeth who both hail from Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT. Salazer-Reid is a native of London, Ontario who will see time at the defensive post. Spaeth, a versatile player who may see time in both the offensive and defensive positions, is a native of Dallas, TX.
Stefanie Snow is a transfer from the University of Minnesota-Twin City and will be entering her sophomore year at UConn. Snow, a defenseman from Bedford, NH, played in 27 games for the Gophers notching one goal and four assists for five points. Before Minnesota, Snow played three seasons at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA where she earned the award for best defensive player in 2000. She was named to the Hockey Night in Boston All-Scholastic Team in 2000 and attended USA Hockey Junior National Camp in 1999.
Laura Stosky, a defenseman, is a native of Edmonton, Alberta. During the 2000-01 season, Stosky was part of the Edmonton Chimos where she tallied six goals and 14 assists for 25 points form the back position. The two seasons prior to the Chimos, she played the Midget Rebels recording 27 goals and 51 assists for 78 points in her two-year stint.
Another native of Michigan is Angie Wallace who hails from Mullett Lake. A forward, Wallace played at the Shattuck St. Mary's School in Faribault, MN. Wallace's three-year total at Shattuck was 133 points on 64 goals and 69 assists. She helped Shattuck earn a third place finish in the National Championship during the 2000-01 season, and place first in the All-American Tournament three-year's running.
