Huskies Topple 14th-ranked Eagles in Overtime

Chestnut Hill, Mass. (Oct. 9, 2002)-- Junior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) scored the gamewinner with just under three minutes into sudden death overtime to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 1-0 overtime win over 14th-ranked Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Huskies are on a seven-game win streak and move to 8-5 overall and are unbeaten at 2-0 in the league. The 14th-ranked Eagles fall to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
UConn senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) had the initial shot off a penalty corner in the overtime period which was saved by Boston College goalie Lauren Hill. Malone was there for the rebound and gave UConn its first overtime win of the year.
The Huskies outshot Boston College 11-3, and held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. UConn goalie junior Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) had three saves on the night while Hill stopped seven UConn shots for the Eagles.
The Huskies look to continue their winning ways on Saturday, October 12, when they host Princeton at 1 p.m at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs.
