Huskies Fall to No. 11 Vanderbilt, 9-7

NASHVILLE, VA (March 17) – The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 11 Vanderbilt, 9-7, on Sunday afternoon in rainy conditions in Nashville, TN. The Huskies drop their record 2-3 in the first weeks of the young season, while Vanderbilt jumps to 3-2.
Both the Huskies and the Commodores scored two goals in the first half of play. Pam Lowie (Tully, NY) and Bonnie Wehinger (North Syracuse, NY) combined for both of Connecticut’s goals. Lowie opened the scoring 10-minutes into the game with an assist from Wehinger. Not even a minute-later (10:45), Wehinger raised the score 2-0 on an assist from Lowie. The Commodores countered, scoring at the 13:53 cutting the scoring deficit to one on a goal from Liz Drennan. With 1:51 remaining in the half, Kelly Devlin scored her first of three goals to tie the score.
Opening the second half scoring, UConn’s Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, MD) gave the Huskies the lead at the 30:50 mark. Michelle Wardwell (Norwich, CT) scored UConn’s fourth goal less than a minute later on an assist from Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ), and then Feely gave Connecticut the 5-2 lead on a goal of her own. The next couple of minutes belonged to Vanderbilt as they went on a three goal-scoring spree by Kinsey Osberg, Mary McCeney and Jess Roguski to tie the game. Connecticut took the lead again on Lowie’s second goal of the day at the 43:41 mark of the second half. Devlin tied the score at 6-6 at the midpoint, but UConn fought back to take its last lead of the day on a shot from Kristen Joel (Bel Air, MD). Jennifer Crawley scored two of the three Commodores goals in the last ten minutes of play to help lift Vanderbilt over UConn. Devlin had the game-winner at the 54:57 mark.
April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) fell to 2-3 on the season recording six saves in goal.
Connecticut will take to the field again on Tuesday, March 26 at 4:00 pm at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.
