First Half Domination Lifts UConn Over UMass

STORRS, CT (April 17) – Pam Lowie (Cortland, NY) and Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ) help lead the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team with four goals and two assists apiece past the University of Massachusetts, 15-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. UConn improved its record to 6-5 overall, while UMass fell to 8-5 overall.
Despite UMass scoring first, Connecticut made a mid half run in its domination over Massachusetts seeing six different Huskies notching a goal. Massachusetts struck first scoring at the 1:40 mark on a shot from Jada Emery. Connecticut tied the score less than a minute later on a goal from Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ). The game stood at a stand still for eight-minutes until UConn broke the tie on Felley’s second goal. UMass quickly tied up the game 16-seconds later (11:06) on a goal from Leslie Pollock, and the last time during the game. Connecticut then went on a seven goal-scoring spree through the middle of the half. The Huskies saw three goals from Lowie, and single shots from Feeley, Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, NY), Jacqui Hamilton (Hopkinton, MA) and Heather Bliss (Tully, NY). Jill Blauvelt put a score on the board for the Minutewomen making the score, 9-3, with 4:13 remaining in the half. Feeley and Susan Payne (Penn Yan, NY) each scored to end the half, giving the Huskies the 11-3 halftime lead.
Mullaney opened the second half scoring 2:22 in, followed by a UMass tally minutes later on a shot from Emery. UConn’s Payne notched her second goal of the day at the midpoint of the half, and Emery scored her third goal five-minutes later (20:25). UMass cut the scoring-deficit to seven with just under ten-minutes left in regulation on a shot from Tracy Drown. Connecticut answered back on Lowie’s fourth goal of the afternoon, with Feeley assisting her for the second time. Massachusetts’ Drown scored on a free-position shot with 4:11 left in regulation. Lowie capped off the day’s scoring at 29:11, giving the Huskies the 15-7 victory.
In addition to Lowie five goals and two assists, Feeley’s added four goals and two assists. Mullaney and Payne each had two goals.
April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) earned the win in goal, making six saves. UMass’ Cyndi Doyle stopped 26 shots on goal.
Connecticut will travel to Blacksburg, VA on Saturday, April 22 to take on Virginia Tech at 12 noon.
