Cambridge, MA (Sept. 18, 2002)-- Freshman Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ) tallied two goals, including the game-winner with just under three minutes remaining, to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Harvard. With the win, the Huskies snap a four game losing skid and lift their record to 2-5, while Harvard suffers its first loss and moves to 2-1 overall.
Helwig opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 22:20 from eight yards out. Harvard knotted the game with a goal from Jennifer McDavitt off a penalty corner which was tipped just past the outstretched hands of UConn goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY).
The two teams remained tied through the half until Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) gave Connecticut a 2-1 lead with a blast off of a penalty corner at the 62:25 mark. Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia) and Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) combined for the assists.
Harvard answered immediately tying the game at two apiece just over two minutes later (65:00) by a goal from Shelley Maasdorp off a set corner play.
Both teams had scoring chances in the waning minutes of the game, but Helwig connected first for UConn when she collected a rebound and was able to sneak a shot past Harvard netminder Katie Zacarian for the unassisted game-winner.
Zacarian finished with six saves in goal for the Crimson, while Butler recorded five saves in the win.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Sept. 22, when they travel to face Villanova at 1 p.m. in their first conference match of the year.
