No. 9 Mercyhurst Nips UConn, 2-1

STORRS, CT (Oct. 18) – Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) stopped 27 shots Saturday afternoon, but No. 9 Mercyhurst prevailed 2-1 over the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, CT. The Huskies drop their first decision of 2003 and slip to 1-1-1, Mercyhurst stands at 1-0-0.
The Huskies got on the board first with 5:15 remaining in the first session. Junior Angie Wallace (Mullett Lake, MI) trapped an attempted clear by a Mercyhurst defender in the Lady Laker’s corner. Wallace controlled the puck, skated behind the goal towards an opening and fired a shot off a Mercyhurst defender’s skate. The puck deflected into the goal, giving UConn an early 1-0 edge. The Lady Lakers knotted it up with under one minute remaining in the first period. Shian stoned two shots from point-blank range in the midst of a flurry in front of the net. Mercyhurst’s Lindsay Dellow collected the second rebound and punched it past Shain at 19:08. Jess Dillabough and Ashley Pendelton were credited with the assists.
Mercyhurst was outstanding in the second period, out shooting the Huskies 15-to-10 in the stanza and notching the game-winner at 11:07. Jackie Jarrell took a feed from Jill Nugent on a break-away. Jarrell beat Shain glove side, putting the Lady Lakers up for good.
UConn stormed out of the gate in the third period, ringing up nine shots and holding Mecyhurst to only three attempts on net. The Huskies’ best chance came with 6:30 remaining in the session. Junior Tiffany Owens (Belleville, MI) took a shot that was turned back by Laker keeper Desirae Clark, Katherine Van Deveire (Brandon, Manitoba) dove towards the deflected puck and managed to take a shot as she was falling to the ice. Clark got a piece of it with her stick, preserving the Mercyhurst victory.
The rematch is tomorrow at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. The puck is set to drop at 1:00 p.m.
