STORRS, CT (November 1) -- Gretchen Anderson and Heather Jackson each scored a goal and added two assists against the Huskies, as the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to Princeton on Saturday afternoon at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. The loss drops UConn’s record to 1-3-3 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 1-0-0.
After a scoreless first period that saw Princeton out-shoot the Huskies 9-to-5, the Tigers pounced on Connecticut early in the second session. Anderson grabbed a loose puck at center ice and got ahead of the UConn defense. Anderson faked to her backhand and quickly went to the forehand to sneak it by UConn keeper Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta), giving Princeton a 1-0 edge. Princeton earned a 2-0 advantage after a goal by Lisa Rasumussen at 5:33 in the second stanza. After April Brown took a shot from the point that was saved by Shain, a flurry in front of the net ensued and Rasmussen was able to stuff it in the net.
The Tigers added four third period goals including two of the short-handed variety to put this one out of reach.
Shain denied 27 shots on the afternoon, while Princeton net-minder Megan Van Beusekom stopped 18 shots en route to the shutout.
The two sides will square-off again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs.
